Money Can't Buy Everything

This season started off with so much hype and anticipation. People were excited for the new owner and were expecting the Sabres to be better than ever. Instead, we've witnessed one of the worst seasons in recent years. As it stands right now - it's questionable whether the Sabres will even make the playoffs this year.

The question now is what has to be done to turn this around. Do we need a new coach? Ruff has severed us well but maybe it's time for some changes. Do we need a new goalie? Miller's been amazing, but that concussion may have had an effect on him. Maybe a whole combination of changes is required? Who knows, but it's obvious that something has to be done.

HSBC Arena renamed to First Niagara Center

HSBC first sold all their banking branches throughout New York State to First Niagara bank. Now, only a few weeks later, HSBC also has sold their naming rights to the Sabre's home. First Niagara purchased the naming rights for the next 15 years. All the signs both inside and outside of the area are expected to be changed by October. The financial terms of the deal aren't currently known.

This is the third name that the area has had - originally called Marine Midland area, the area was renamed to HSBC Area after HSBC purchased Marine Midland bank. The area was named HSBC area in 1999.

Hockey Season is almost here!

So, I haven't updated this blog in ages, but I finally decided to do so today. I highly doubt anyone still reads this, but it's time to try to bring back some readers. The hockey season is nearly here, and this will be the first full year with Pegula as the owner. I think this will be a promising season for the Sabres. The regular season record that the Sabres had after Pegula took over last season was good being 16–4–4.

The first preseason game is on September 19th, 7PM at home against the Hurricanes. Check back for future updates and news.

New Owner?

A billionaire, orginally from Buffalo has expressed an interest in purchasing the Buffalo Sabres from current Owner, Tom Golisano. Terrence Pegula is a billionaire, who made his money from an Oil and Natural Gas Company he founded and then later sold. He is the 110th richest man in America, and is expected to take the Sabres over in the next 2 months.

The move should be good for the Sabres, as Pegula has a very little chance of moving the Sabres out of Buffalo, and he cares more about the game of Hockey than Golisano as well.

Sabres Still winless at home

The Sabres have managed to break their losing streak and now have 3 victories this year, but they still remain win less at home. Tomorrow they play Philadelphia, and will be hoping for their first home victory this year.

Pominville also recently started back to practicing with the team, so we can expect to see him back soon.

Sabres Recent Losses

After an impressing pre-season the Sabres hype has already started to decline. They've lost their past 3 games, only winning one so far in the season. There still is plenty of time for the Sabres to turn around though, and they will be in a better position when Pominville returns from his concussion.

The Sabres played a hard game last night against New Jersey with both teams scoreless when heading into overtime. The game ended only about a minute into overtime with New Jersey shutting the Sabres out.

Lalime and Miller

From the Buffalo News:
Patrick Lalime is a beloved figure in the Buffalo Sabres' locker room. Players were downright offended when he was booed last March in HSBC Arena and Ryan Miller gave him a shout-out from the podium while collecting his Vezina Trophy at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas.
Those factors certainly had to enter into the team's thinking when it came to re-signing the 36-year-old for a third season as Miller's backup...

----

I think that having Lalime who is a good backup goalie is important because of the fact Miller gets fatigued after only a couple of games and quickly starts making mistakes.
